As people started to play with video as an art medium, the body was a big factor and way to relate art. When artists started to use video as an extension of their medium, they were allowed to capture the body much more easily than before. The people who were using video as an extension of their practice, were the leading artists working with video art, instead of using video for media purposes or for television. People later would use all aspects, like film, sounds, and still images to relay their messages and ideas, but all of them were making "performance"art, because there was always an action to be relayed through the video.

As video art progressed, the capturing of the image of a body in front of a camera because to familiar a sight, and artists like, Nauman, wanted to change that so he filmed the inside of his studio without the artist, himself, in it. This idea that the process of making art was also art was  very influential in the way these artist tended to think. Then artists dabbled around more and started to want the audience interacting to make the art. This was a very intimate way to work and allowed for an even more strong bond to occur between the viewer and the artist. All of these advances have morphed New Media this way and that, since New Media is concerned with all these practices and mediums, and film helped progress and mold all of these different mediums together.
